How to Program a Key Fob in 5 Simple Steps (Car Key Guide)

Car key fobs also referred to as electronic car keys are essential in controlling doors of a car, alarm, trunk and starting a car from a distance you a remote. Key fobs, like other electronic devices are likely to malfunction with time because of losses of signal. When such cases happen, one can easily reprogram the key fob and use it without having to call an auto locksmith. This article explains the steps one should follow when programming a car key remote.

It is recommended that you read the user manual or browse it in the internet to have the specific steps for the specific kind of car. This is because different manufacturers have different steps for the key fob reprogramming process.

There are various steps one should follow to program car key fob.

STEP 1-Turn on the ignition

You should sit in the driver’s seat with both the ignition key and the key fob with all doors closed. Then insert the ignition key and turn it to its position to start the motor and without starting the engine.

STEP 2-Press the lock button

In the key fob, press the lock button aiming it at the transmission receiver in the front of the car above the mirror. Then after turning on the remote for a couple of seconds, press the lock button.

STEP 3-Turn off the ignition

Reach for the key in the ignition and turn it off immediately and hut the car off. Continue moving fast and after a few seconds, the system of the car will reset the commands. Ensure that you press the lock button with few seconds after turning the ignition key and take the key out of the ignition slot immediately and move to the next step.

STEP 4-Repeat the process with other key fobs

Carefully repeat the previous steps to program other key fobs. This is recommended because majority of car models are likely to wipe all the other fobs one another is reprogrammed. This means that you should turn the ignition off and hit the lock button of the next fob that you are programming and turn the car off again. Remember. Do not wait between these actions because the process might fail. The car might not program all the fobs correctly and there will be the need to start the process from the beginning. If the programming process fails due to delays between actions, some car types require that you repeat the cycle several times for the car to re-enter into programming mode. Therefore, each key should be carefully reprogrammed carefully and quickly after the last one.

STEP 5-Restart the process

After programming all the fobs, start the process again by turning the car on without the engine. Press the lock button of the first key fob. There should be a sound of the car locks turning showing that the process was successful. Do this for all other car key fobs where hearing the locks sound on every fob indicates a successful process.

In conclusion, it is important to understand that the car key fob reprogramming steps depends on the specific type of car. The process discussed above is general and the simplest. It works with most cars but it is recommended that you find detailed information in regards to your type of car in the user manual.
